The Environmental and Social Risks Management System (ESRMS) is a tool used by managers and risk analysts to help them assess and avoid environmental risks more effectively and identify any ESR issues affecting loan applications.
All of the Group's subsidiaries are now required to use this tool. As part of the implementation process, Isabelle Blaes (a consultant from the Okoume training agency) and Yao Guemedi (the Group's Head of Legal Affairs and project manager for the ESRMS implementation programme) visited Benin on 9 and 10 February 2015. The tasks they carried out during their visit included:
- checking the analysis of the country's social and environmental background with members of the Management Committee;
- training legal staff, branch managers, risk analysts and account managers in how to use the tool.
Yao Guemedi highlighted that the Group's leadership is keen to ensure that environmental and social risks will be minimised for all subsidiaries. From now on, thanks to the ESRMS tool, issues relating to areas such as housing, water, infrastructure, child labour and the protection of cultural and world heritage sites will be clearly flagged up when employees review loan applications.
